The Lie Usually Starts Earlier Than You Think

When we look back over our lives, it’s easy to assume that our biggest struggles began with our biggest mistakes.

Maybe it was a failed marriage.

A broken relationship.

An addiction.

Anxiety.

Depression.

Or a decision you wish you could take back.

For years, I thought that’s where my story began too.

But during my healing journey, the Holy Spirit gently took me much further back.

Long before the choices…

Long before the heartbreak…

Long before the consequences…

There was a little girl trying to make sense of the world around her.

As children, we don’t just experience life.

We interpret it.

We ask questions no one hears.

Why did this happen?

Was it my fault?

Am I enough?

Am I safe?

When no one answers those questions, we answer them ourselves.

And those answers quietly become the beliefs we carry into adulthood.

The older I’ve become, the more convinced I am that most adults aren’t reacting to today’s circumstances.

They’re reacting to yesterday’s conclusions.

That’s why healing often feels confusing.

We’re trying to fix today’s behavior while ignoring yesterday’s beliefs.

The Holy Spirit never began my healing with my biggest mistakes.

He began with my earliest wounds.

Not to shame me.

Not to blame anyone.

But because that’s where the lies first took root.

Healing isn’t about reliving the past.

It’s about allowing God to speak truth into the places where lies first found a home.

Sometimes the breakthrough you’re praying for isn’t waiting in your future.

Sometimes it’s waiting in a conversation with your past.

Not to stay there.

But to finally invite Jesus into it.

Reflection

Take a moment and ask yourself:

  • What is one of your earliest memories of feeling rejected, afraid, or unseen?

  • What did you begin believing about yourself because of that moment?

  • Have you ever asked God what He says about that memory?

Healing often begins much earlier than we think.
