Am I Living from a False Identity?
There was a time when I believed my biggest problem was my behavior.
If I could just be more patient…
More disciplined…
More confident…
Then everything else would change.
But healing doesn’t begin by changing behavior.
It begins by asking a different question:
Where is my behavior coming from?
The truth is, we all live from an identity.
The question isn’t if you have one.
The question is whether it’s rooted in God’s truth or in a conclusion you made because of a painful experience.
False identities are often difficult to recognize because they feel normal. They’ve been with us for so long that we mistake them for our personality.
Maybe you’ve thought:
“I have to be in control.”
“I can’t trust anyone.”
“I’m always the one people leave.”
“Nothing I do is ever enough.”
“If people really knew me, they wouldn’t love me.”
Those thoughts may feel true.
But feelings don’t determine truth.
God’s Word does.
One of the questions the Holy Spirit continually asked me during my healing journey was:
“Who told you that?”
Not to shame me.
Not to make me feel guilty.
But to help me recognize that I had been living from voices that never came from Him.
The beautiful thing about God’s truth is that it doesn’t simply expose the lie.
It replaces it.
Every false identity loses its power when it’s brought into the light of what God has already spoken.
Healing begins there.
Not when your circumstances change.
But when your agreement changes.
Reflection
Ask yourself:
What thought do I have about myself most often?
Where did I first learn to believe it?
Does God’s Word actually say that about me?
Sometimes freedom begins with one honest question.
Who told me that?
